Introduction to the Central Nervous System (CNS)

The Central Nervous System (CNS) includes the brain and the spinal cord. The brain is protected by the skull (the cranial cavity) and the spinal cord travels from the back of the brain, down the center of the spine, stopping in the lumbar region of the lower back. CNS is made up of vast neural networks, signaling within these circuits enables thinking, language, feeling, learning, memory, and all function and sensation. Creative Biolabs provides high-quality systematic CNS transport analysis services.

Types and Functions of Transport Systems in the CNS

  • Receptor-Mediated Transport

Receptor-mediated transport systems work via endosomal structures in which substances in the extracellular space (ECS) or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are taken up by energy-requiring systems into endosomal sacks and then transported from the ECS to the inside of cells or in the reverse direction.

  • Active Transport and Facilitated Diffusion

Epithelial cells must transport substances through two plasma membranes for through-put transport. The transport mechanism into the epithelial or endothelial cell from the blood side may be via active transport and from the other (apical) side facilitated diffusion.

  • Carrier-Mediated Transport

Different types of carrier-mediated transport systems exist in plasma membranes and/or in other parts of the cell. There are at least three cyclic organic acid transport systems at the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and/or blood CSF barrier. With the help of a glucose carrier, Dehydroascorbic acid (DHA) can be transferred readily from the blood into the brain via cerebral capillaries.

  • P-glycoprotein (P-Gp)

The P-Gp system is involved in transferring certain drugs back into the blood after they have entered endothelial cells (from the blood).
